Panopto - General instructions
The Panopto service is provided by the Nordic NORDUnet. The system is physically located outside Finland, but remains within the Nordic region.
Staff can log in to Panopto with their Xamk user credentials at: https://video.xamk.fi/
Students do not have direct access to Panopto like staff. Students use Panopto through a video component attached to Learn courses. The Panopto Recorder app allows you to make video and screen recordings easily.
PANOPTO TERMS OF USE
With the first login, the user must accept the terms of use of the Panopto service, within which the service can be used.
Panopto is intended for recordings related to the operations of South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences (e.g. work or study) and the university can use the recordings in the service in its own operations. The ownership of the recording in Panopto remains with the author, and the right of use of the University of Applied Sciences does not prevent the author from using the recording in other contexts. Recordings on Panopto must comply with good practices, applicable laws and regulations and must not contain content that violates trade secrets, privacy, or other agreements.
The users of Panopto are responsible for all use of the service under their own username and for ensuring that the recordings they add to the service do not infringe copyright or other intellectual property rights, and they have the necessary permissions to use them. The users are also responsible for obtaining the consent of the persons appearing in the recordings to use the recording in Panopto.
Video lifecycle
By default, recordings have a lifecycle of two years from the last viewing, after which they are automatically deleted, first to the trash and then after 180 days finally deleted. If necessary, the lifecycle can be extended if there is a justified need.
Accessibility
In video and audio recordings, accessibility means adding subtitles to the material. According to the accessibility criteria, videos and sound recordings must be made accessible within 14 days of publication. Subtitling is particularly relevant for people with hearing impairments, but it also benefits other users in different situations: the sound quality of a video may be poor, there may be a lot of background noise, or the sound level of the video cannot be raised and there are no headphones. Panopto has a speech recognition-based subtitling tool to automatically generate texts. However, subtitles should always be checked and corrected for possible errors.
If you want to ensure accessibility to videos and audio recordings in your courses, please note the following:
- Video materials require subtitles or a separate text alternative for repetitive or over-semester-long materials in courses.
- No separate subtitling is required if the video serves as a media alternative, i.e. the information contained in the video is already presented in text form.
- The minimum requirement is to add subtitles in the language in which the video is presented (e.g. Finnish video subtitled in Finnish, English video subtitled in English).
- The content of audio recordings must be subtitled (e.g. the content of podcasts must also be subtitled).
- Streaming videos or audio recordings do not need to be subtitled.
