Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) in the Learn learning environment (available from 10 a.m. on Monday, March 2, 2026)

MFA (multi-factor authentication) is a Microsoft login security policy that verifies the user's identity using another method in addition to their password, such as the Microsoft Authenticator app or a text message code. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) improves the security of logging in to the Learn learning environment.

What does MFA mean?

MFA means that logging in requires two steps:

  1. username and password
  2. separate confirmation (for example, via a mobile app or text message/phone call)

The long form of the username is used to log in (students: username@edu.xamk.fi and staff: username@xamk.fi).

MFA:n käyttöönotto lyhyesti

When you log in to Learn for the first time after enabling MFA, the system will automatically guide you to enable MFA.

During activation:

  • you select a verification method that suits you
  • you confirm your selection according to the instructions on the screen

Available verification methods in Xamk

MFA authentication can be done in the following ways:

  • Authentication requested by a mobile application
    • For example, a login request accepted through the Microsoft Authenticator application or a one-time code provided by the application.
  • Text message confirmation (SMS)
    • A 4-8-digit one-time code is sent to your phone, which is entered when logging in to the website requesting it.
  • Phone call
    • Login is confirmed by answering the automated phone call according to the instructions.

Read more detailed instructions in Xamk MFA instructions (Xamk) and Multi-factor authentication (Lux-intranet, requires login).

Working without a smartphone

Note! MFA is also available without a smartphone.

If you do not have a smartphone or cannot use the mobile app, you can also log in to Learn in the following ways:

  • Text message confirmation (SMS)
  • Phone call

If you need to select or change the MFA option, you can do so according to the instructions in the MFA settings.

If you are unable to log in to Learn due to MFA
